POSITION: Part-Time Homestay Coordinator (HC)

OPENING DATE: January 12, 2015

CLOSING DATE: January 23, 2015

Under the supervision of the Language and Cross-culture Coordinator (LCC), the position serves as liaison and support to Peace Corps trainees living in homestay in a Community-Based Training (CBT) and undergoing Pre-Service Training in a rural or semi-urban setting in designated regions of Cameroon.

The position is part-time and based wherever PC training takes place. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work and live in rural or semi-urban setting with very limited resources. Solid Cross-cultural and negotiation skills required.

Required Qualifications:

Applicant must be a Cameroon citizen or nay citizen authorized to work in Cameroon, must not have been employed in intelligence-related activities, and must be able to submit application that clearly documents how s/he meets each of the following qualifications:

  • Education : University Master Degree in Language, Literature, Social Sciences or related to any of the 4 programs of PC Cameroon (Education, Community Health, Agriculture and Youth Development)
  • Prior Work Experience: At least 3 years of homestay or logistic orientation experience in rural and semi-urban communities of Cameroon.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French and English.
  • Skills and abilities : Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision; work as a team member under high pressure with occasional long and anti-social hours; efficiently design and deliver language and cross-culture sessions using Adult Learning Principles and the Experiential Learning Cycle.

HC Duties and Responsibilities

  • Setup and review homestay program goals and objectives, and the host family selection criteria in consultation with Language and Cross-culture Coordinator (LCC), PCMO, and Training Manager (TM).
  • Develop a host family selection strategy for PST.
  • Orient and train language staff regarding the homestay program.
  • Assist the language and culture coordinator (LCC) in the final selection of host families.
  • Organize and conduct homestay orientation and evaluation (initial, mid-PST, and final) for host family in coordination with the PST staff.
  • Organize and conduct homestay program orientation for Trainees in coordination with PST staff.
  • Provide necessary guidance and support to the PST staff for implementing the homestay program.
  • Serve as the key liaison between PC staff and PST staff in regard to the homestay program and update regularly the TM and the LCC on the homestay program.
  • Serve as the liaison for host families and maintain regular communication with them.
  • Have a regular conversation with Trainees regarding their homestay experience
  • Make regular visits to the family to check-up how things are going. These visits should occur at least twice a month.
  • During the regular visits, discretely check the hygiene of the house and rooms. Do not take notes while with the family.
  • Note any minor problems and discuss ways that the Trainee can improve the situation tactfully within the family unit.
  • Problems that may endanger the health of the Trainee should be referred to the PCMO.
  • Spend an even amount of time with families.
  • Monitor the homestay program by providing the necessary information, guidance, and feedback to both the Trainees and the host families.
  • Design and use case studies to improve the homestay program.
  • Maintain the regular communication about the homestay program with the LCC and the TM.
  • Summit at least two comprehensive reports to the TM during PST.
  • May serve as back up in language and cross-culture training.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by LCC or TM.
