JOB ADVERT: Literacy Advisor

Summary

Nascent Solutions is seeking two qualified Literacy Advisors to support a USDA-funded McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition program in Cameroon. The Literacy Advisors will support the implementation of activities designed to improve the literacy of school age children by enhancing the quality of instruction. Literacy Advisors will be responsible for supporting a team of Literacy Coaches and new business development.

Location: Kumbo, Garoua and Ngaoundere

Type of Employment: Salaried, full-time

Reporting: Reports to Nascent’s Program Manager; with technical oversight from the Director of Education

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the implementation of program activities geared to improve the literacy of school age children.
• Support the development of literacy materials including teachers guides, students textbooks and other supplementary reading materials
• Support and advise the literacy coaches in the use of classroom teacher observation tools
• Develop an implementation plan for school libraries and mobile reading activities for each school community
• Conduct regular visits to the school to provide technical assistance and ensure proper implementation of program activities
• Work with M&E specialist to create and implement a data collection system and inform alterations in teacher training curriculum manuals
• Prepare and submit project success stories with photos/videos on a regular basis
• Prepare high quality quarterly and annual reports for submission to USDA
• Work with the other technical team members to identify new business development opportunities and prepare concept notes in education and other related topics
• Prepare and submit project reports and develop annual performance plans
• Perform other duties as appropriate

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in education, international relations or related field;
• At least 6 years’ working experience in education sector or as literacy advisor for a non-governmental agency;
• Fluent in English and French languages (will be tested);
• Significant experience in early childhood development, primary education or teacher professional development or teacher training institutions;
• Experience with education development programs in early grade reading/literacy in developing countries;
• Experience with supervision or coaching of teachers and familiarity with teacher coaching models;
• Experience with training of trainers or ability to present professional trainings
• Knowledge of current trends in education development; particularly in early grade reading;
• Excellent verbal & written communication skills with ability to write high quality and detailed reports;
• Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Spreadsheets, PowerPoint);
• Knowledge of the local languages will be an added advantage;
• Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders and strengthen existing partnerships;
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to be a team player;
• Ability to work under challenging circumstances and be productive;
• Ability to travel locally at least 50% of the time
